John’s market review, 12th December 2011

Written By John Velluti

Rain is causing lots of trouble all over the country. Farmers cannot dig and cannot pick when it rains. Produce that is picked and has been affected by rain has a terrible shelf life. It is a very difficult time rightnow, with price and quality all over the place!

Blood Oranges – we have some in stock, but not many.

White Asparagus – not available at the moment but should be in soon.

Bananas - are back to normal at long last.

Borlotti Beans – we have some in stock, but like Blood Oranges, we don’t have many. Very expensive at $15 / kg

Ruby Grapefruit – very cheap at $24 / box.

Baby Mint – not available.

Large Fennel – out of season, but we do have plenty of Baby Fennel.

Grapes- still NOT cheap but quality is excellent.

Cherries - South Australian produce is the best at the moment in terms of quality and shelf life. Not cheap though at around $15 / kg.

Berries & Stone Fruit – all varieties are in and are well priced.

Apples – out of season, so quite expensive – especially Granny Smiths.

Broccoli – very expensive at $7.50 / kg.fruit

Heirloom Carrots – plentiful and quality is very good.

Beetroot - Gold Beetroot are a little scarce but ok, and Target Beetroot are not available for a little while.

Silk Eggplant – available and quality is excellent at $39 / box.

Figs – getting better and cheaper at around $70 / tray.

English Spinach & Rocket – these are worst affected out of all the leaf lines. They are improving, but still not great. Continuing rain will not help.

Mushrooms - Slippery Jacks & Pine Mushrooms have begun.

Limes – price is at last on its way down.

Expensive or hard to get

Target Beetroot, Asparagus, White Asparagus, Lemons, Limes, Edible Flowers, Baby Mint, English Spinach, Cumquats, Blood Oranges & Figs

Good, cheap and in season

Apricots, Peaches, Nectarines, Mangoes (QLD), Lychees (QLD), Zucchini, Roman Beans, Red Radish,

Blueberries, Raspberries, Roma Tomatoes, Truss Tomatoes, Heirloom Carrots and Green Almonds
