John’s market review, Tuesday 22nd November 2011

Written By John Velluti

fruitBerries – all varieties are available at the moment. Blueberries $3.50 a punnet, Blackberries $8.00 a punnet, Raspberries $6.00 a punnet, Red Currants $9.50 a punnet, Strawberries $4.50 a punnet, Mulberries $9.00 a punnet

Zucchini Flowers – quality is excellent, but supply has slowed considerably, due to the inconsistent weather over the past week. Price is up and availability is down.

Greens - Broccoli, Zucchini, Lebanese / Grey Zucchini, Snow Peas, Sugar Snap Peas, Broccolini, English Spinach, Silverbeet & Rainbow Silverbeet. All excellent at the moment, and very, very cheap.

Grapes – supply and quality are good, but price is very high at $16 / kg.

Green, Roman, Borlotti, Yellow & Flat Beans – all excellent and well-priced.

Broad Beans – have basically finished for the season. What is available is not good.

Globe Artichokes – season is over. There are a few floating around the market, but be warned about these …quality is not good.

Mangoes & Stone Fruit – all excellent.

Limes & Passionfruit – both still very expensive. There has been little relief in price.

Green Asparagus – quality is excellent, but there is less available in the Market, which has seen prices increase over the last week or so. Average size bunches are $2.50 each. White are still OK, but Purple are inconsistent.

Heirloom Carrots & Tomatoes – all is well, with the exception of Large Heirloom Tomatoes. They are very, very short in supply.

Lychees – are in, so order away! $20 / kg at the moment.

Fennel - large Fennel has finished for the season. Safest bet is with Baby Fennel – no problems with supply at that this stage.
