Natural remedies home first aid kit

Written By Alison Johnson

natural first aid kitHere are some ideas for a little kit you can put together to cope with all the day to day accidents that occur with littlies around.   I have included a few for Mum as well.

BURNS

A bottle of Lavender Essential Oil is just the best thing ever for putting on a burn or scald.  It takes away the pain straight away.  Use it straight from the bottle undiluted.

BRUISES

A tube of Arnica Cream is essential in the Home First Aid Kit.  Rub it on all the bangs on the head littlies get when they first start to walk.  You will see a swelling go down before your very eyes, and it prevents bruising.

Arnica Cream is wonderful too for all the knocks kids get as they get a bit older and play sport.

Don’t use on broken skin.

CALMING

There are plenty of occasions when it is poor overtired frazzled Mum who needs some emergency help. Chammomile tea is good for these occasions in which more caffeine is not the answer.

CUTS

Calendula cream draws the edges of a cut closed.  When my son was little he fell face forward in to the edge of a door and cut his head, which bled profusely.  I put Calendula Cream on it and by the time I got him to the hospital the edges had drawn together and the cut closed up.  He still needed a couple of stitches, but it was very impressive.

CYSTITUS

Barley water is an oldie but a goodie, and really works. Simmer one cup of barley in one litre of water for 20 minutes.  Strain and drink half a cup of barley water, made up to one cup with fresh water and add a squeeze of lemon juice.  Remember to drink a lot of water when you have cystitis to dilute the urine and flush out your system.

DERMATITIS, ECZEMA

Paw Paw cream is wonderful for soothing rashy, inflamed skin.  Good for nappy rash too.

DIARRHOEA

Grate a peeled apple, let it go brown, sprinkle with sugar and eat.  The pectin in the apple is released when it goes a bit brown, and bonds to any enterotoxins and carries them out of the body.  Soothes quickly.

HIVES, ITCHES

Keep a jar of Chickweed Ointment in your kit.  It is wonderful for all itchy things.  Good for mosquito bites, flea bites, hives and the itchy form of eczema.  Stops little ones with eczema scratching in their sleep.

SHOCKS, UPSETS

Keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy on hand.  A few drops under the tongue quickly calms down everybody in the family when upsets occur.

SPRAINS

Soak a bandage in Witch Hazel and wrap around the affected area.  Witch Hazel is a good tonic for the skin.  Good too, for men to use after shaving.

TUMMY PAINS

Peppermint tea is wonderful for soothing sore tummies.

WIND

Soak a teaspoon of dill seeds in half a cup of cold water for a day.  Give to babies with wind or colic in teaspoonful doses direct in to the mouth.
